King Skule: (goes to the window and speaks through it) People of Nidaros, what do you want? Here stands your King.
Citizen: (outside) Leave our town! The Birchlegs will burn it and kill us, if they find you here!.
King Skule: We must stand together. I have been a good King to you. I have asked little from you -
Man's voice: (from the crowd) What about the blood that ran at Laaka?
A woman: Give me back my husband!
A boy: Give me my father and brother!
Another woman: Give me my three sons, King Skule!
A man: He is not King! The monks did not bring out the shrine!
2nd man: He has not been proclaimed at the shrine!
3rd man: He is not our lawful King!
King Skule: (shrinks behind the curtains) Not lawful -! Not King!
