The young painter Oswald has returned from a long stay abroad.
Oswald: (stops in the doorway). Oh, I'm sorry - I thought you were in the study. (comes closer). Good morning, Pastor.
Manders: (stares). Why-! Most extraordinary!
Mrs. Alving: Well, Pastor Manders, what do you think of him?
Manders: I think - I think -! But is this really -?
Oswald: Yes, this is the Prodigal Son, Pastor.
Manders: Oh, but my dear young friend -!
Oswald: Well, the son, anyway.
Mrs. Alving: Oswald is thinking of the time when you used to be so strongly opposed to his becoming a painter.
Manders: Many a step which to human eyes seems dubious often turns out - (Shakes his hand.) Anyway, welcome, welcome! My dear Oswald -! I trust you will allow me to call you by your Christian name?
